CLUB NEWS IN THE PACK An empty backpack does little to support a hiker. A full backpack is necessary. The same holds true for the 46er organization. We need many volunteers to assist us. Deborah Bedard #15052 Assistant Secretary Deb says, “As a resident of the Southern Adirondacks, I have enjoyed hiking, kayaking, biking, skiing, and snowshoeing throughout the Adirondacks. Upon retirement I embarked on a journey that changed my life — aspiring to become a 46er. During my four-year journey I summited a few of the peaks with a colleague who began hiking in the Adirondacks 50 years ago. She was often shocked by the impact foot traffic and erosion has had upon the trails. As a 46er I feel a responsibility to ensure the same opportunities I have enjoyed will remain available for future generations. I am very pleased to support, as Assistant Secretary, the many passionate and dedicated 46er volunteers who seek to help protect our environment, provide educational opportunities on the proper use of wilderness, and participate in trail projects. As a fellow 46er I hope you will consider joining us! 1 2 The Special Event/Dinner Committee worked a booth at the "Upstate Sports" Outdoor Summer Expo in Saratoga Springs on March 14-15. The 46ers booth was staffed by 12 46ers who volunteered to educate the public on all the things the 46er organization does for the Adirondack Mountains (trailhead stewarding, adopt a highway, correspondence program, trail work, LNT, Campership, Donations and more). We interacted with hundreds of people throughout the weekend! We are planning to attend the winter expo held on Oct. 24-25 with a special focus on winter hiking preparation. The Committee would also like to give a "shout out" to Common Roots in South Glens Falls for providing an outstanding winter dinner event for the 46ers!
